More and more people are into DIY, especially repainting walls, doors, and cabinets using a paint sprayer. However, not all novices know how to use the painting tool well, which causes too much overspray and wasting too much volume of paint.
If you are planning to paint your kitchen cabinet first time using a paint sprayer, here are some useful tips that can help you big time.
Tip #1: Carefully disassemble the cabinet
Clear the area and remove all the items inside the cabinet. And place the items in a separate clean room. Carefully unscrew the cabinet doors and drawers. Remove the handles, knobs, and hinges. Make sure to label each part for fast reassembling.
Tip #2: Mask all nearby areas
Before spray painting, make sure to cover all areas that will get affected during the repainting session. Mask the walls, countertops, appliances, and even the flooring that you do not want to get painted.
Tip #3: Prepare and repair the cabinet parts
Using warm water and trisodium phosphate or TSP, clean all the surfaces that are greasy parts or have mildew, molds, and other deposited soot. And then dry it thoroughly.
Using sandpaper, lightly polish the surfaces to remove paint layers and coatings. Patch the minor holes and cracks using wood putty and sand it down to make it even.
Lastly, clean all the dust and other residues from polishing.
Tip #4: Prime the cabinet
Using one of the best cabinets paint sprayers, you need to prime the doors, the frames, and other parts inside the cabinet. You may use a stain-blocking primer. Let it dry. Sand the surfaces again to smoothen the surface. And apply another coat of primer.
Tip #5: Be patient when spray painting
After the primer has dried down, it is time to spray your first coat of paint; do it slowly to avoid over-dripping or splattering of paint. Let it dry for 60 minutes. Sand down the surface again to smoothen it and apply another coat of paint.
By spraying two coats of primer and two coats of paint and sanding the surface in between each of the coats, it gives a finer finish and better spray painting results.
But how do you spray the right way to create a smooth finish?
- Do not spray paint vertically. Instead, spray the surfaces that are facing up; this will avoid drips and splatters.
- Do not spray too thick, or you’ll start seeing cracks of paint out of nowhere.
- Do not spray paint under direct sunlight, or else you’ll get a rough finish.
Be patient when spray painting and go lightly. Rushing the spray painting task would lead to splatter, blobs, and drips.
