Menopause

Eat your way to a healthy Menopause - 27 January 1997

Nutrition expert Maryon Stewart launched the Natural Health Advisory Service in 1987 to provide natural answers for those with PMS and menopause problems. She has written several books, including Beat Menopause Without HRT and Beat PMS Through Diet.

The menopause and PMS can be beaten through nutritional changes to your diet. Many women reach the menopause and think it is the beginning of the end.

That is complete rubbish - their children are grown up, they are more financially secure, they can spend more time with their partner, but unfortunately they are in no physical state to enjoy it. But that's just lack of education.

Two-thirds of women can't tolerate HRT and come off it within nine months. A study we carried out showed that 90% of doctors don't have nutritional training and don't know how to treat these women.

Most of the women I see are at the point of no return - their life has come to standstill, they've given up their job, they lack confidence and they're usually irritable, uptight and aggressive with flagging energy levels.

Recent research shows that 42 per cent of these women have contemplated suicide. But within four months of changing their diet and lifestyle, they can feel completely different.

A car needs to be serviced regularly and filled up with petrol. In the same way, if the body's specific nutritional needs are not met, we end up in a mess. My programmes teach women how to redress the balance and put back into the body what's been taken out.

Women learn about foods that are rich in helpful nutrients, which nutritional supplements they need to take, and are encouraged to start a modest exercise programme.

I'm not a miracle worker - it does take four months to influence brain chemistry and hormones - but I have seen some quite dramatic changes in the women I treat. They go from a standstill to feeling better than ever before.
