LoSalt is a blend of two natural minerals - sodium and potassium.  The potassium is mined from deep below the North Sea off the North Yorkshire coast.  Klinge then purify it to pharmaceutical grade quality and blend it with salt (sodium chloride) from the ancient salt mines of Cheshire.  The resulting product is an even blend of 66.6% potassium chloride and 33% sodium chloride.  A small amount of flowing material (magnesium carbonate maximum 0.5%) is added to ensure LoSalt remains free flowing.  LoSalt therefore contains 66% less sodium than common salt and is rich in potassium.  A diet low in sodium and high in potassium has been shown to lower blood pressure.  LoSalt is the original and brand leader* in the reduced sodium salt category and can be used in both cooking and at the table.  It can of course be found in all supermarkets.  It comes packed in a 350g drum and a 700g family drum.  LoSalt is also widely used as an ingredient in ready meals, bakery goods, pies, cooked meats and hams, soups, sauces and baked beans.

We are what we eat

So the saying goes, and today we are becoming more and more concerned about how what we eat affects our bodies. Common table salt - sodium chloride - although essential for our health, is something we eat too much of. On average we eat the equivalent of two and a half teaspoons each day - about five times more sodium than the body needs to function efficiently. And now that salt - or more precisely, the sodium element of it is being closely linked with high blood pressure, strokes, heart disease and osteoporosis, it's more than time to think about cutting down

So how to cut down on salt and increase potassium intake

The best and simplest thing to do is cut out the salt that's easiest to cut out - the salt you use at the table and add in cooking. But if you, or your family, like a salty taste, or find some unsalted foods bland, then think about a low-sodium alternative to satisfy your taste-buds. LoSalt contains only one third the sodium of common salt, yet it has all the flavour, and looks, cooks and tastes the same. And as it contains the two natural body minerals - potassium and sodium in a 2 to 1 ratio, it's a great way to get the low salt habit going. As cooking is the point at which so much of our daily intake of salt occurs, it is only sensible to start cutting down on salt in the kitchen, when preparing food. This is where the right low-sodium alternative, like LoSalt, can still give you all the taste, flavour and seasoning in your food that you have come to expect.
